It is one of the most frustrating experiences in fitness: you calculate your calorie deficit, adhere strictly to your meal plan, lose weight steadily for 6 to 8 weeks, and then suddenly—the scale stops moving entirely.

Many dieters assume they are in "starvation mode" or that their metabolism is "broken." In exercise physiology, this phenomenon is called Adaptive Thermogenesis (or metabolic adaptation). Understanding how your body defends its energy stores is the key to breaking plateaus without ruining your health or muscle mass.

What Is Metabolic Adaptation?

Metabolic adaptation is an evolutionary survival mechanism. When you maintain a sustained caloric deficit, your brain perceives a threat to long-term energy availability. To conserve energy, your endocrine and nervous systems downregulate non-essential energy burn.

Research published in Obesity Research demonstrates that as you lose weight, your total daily energy expenditure drops by more than what can be explained by weight loss alone. Specifically, metabolic adaptation reduces TDEE through four pathways:

How to Prevent and Reverse Metabolic Adaptation

1. Avoid Aggressive Crash Deficits
